What is BOTOX®?

Botox is an injectable that reduces the appearance and wrinkles by limiting the mobility of the muscles underneath. Botox is one of the brand names for botulinum toxin therapy, or neurotoxin injectables. When Botox is injected, it temporarily paralyzes the muscle, causing the wrinkles to stop forming.

While Botox is possibly the most common neurotoxin injectable, there are other brand names as well. Botox has become a well known and common procedure to lessen the look of wrinkles and fine lines. It is not a permanent solution and requires continual follow-up to see results.

Many people have a specific idea of what Botox looks like due to celebrity faces from decades past. They may think that Botox means a face stuck in one shape forever, unable to show emotion. However, Botox has come a long way since then and is very natural and seamless looking. Do your own research before committing to any procedures. Botox can be used very minimally, and most people would not even know you’ve had it done.

Speaking with a professional is always recommended beforehand as they can help you determine the amount of Botox you’d like administered as well as where. A professional can also help answer any questions or concerns you have regarding Botox.

What is BOTOX® used for?

Botox may be most well known for its use to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Patients use it both as a preventative and an after-care once wrinkles have already formed. In the past, mostly celebrities used Botox. Now it’s becoming more widespread.

While it does help in that regard, there are also medical conditions that Botox helps mitigate. Lazy eye is often caused by a muscle imbalance in the eye’s positioning – botox injectables can help reduce the appearance. Hyperhidrosis, or a condition where the patient sweats excessively, can also be cured with botox.

Those that experience intense migraines also see results from Botox. Botox can help reduce conditions that cause severe and painful muscle contractions. Bladder issues such as incontinence can also be lessened with Botox injectables. While botox is known for its cosmetic reasons, there are many cases where Botox helps medically. The muscle’s paralyzing can help alleviate pain for those who experience intense spasms or pulling muscles.

If you experience any muscle issues, you should consult a professional about using Botox to treat them. The cosmetic benefits often overtake the medical, but it’s essential to understand that Botox has more to offer than just the wrinkle-fixing aspects.

How is BOTOX® administered?

Does it hurt? How much do I need? How long does it take?

A.

Botox is an injectable administered by a small needle into the point area where the muscle is being paralyzed. The procedure is painless, and is equivalent to a pinch.

The amount of Botox and the number of administered needles required will depend on how much Botox you’re getting injected and the area you’re working on. Some areas may require more than others, for example. You will work with your Larry beforehand to pick out the correct amount for you.

Botox® Frequently Asked Questions:

What should I expect after a BOTOX® session?

After your session, you should not disturb or touch the injection sites in any way for the next 24 hours. Rubbing the site can cause the Botox to move around to areas you may not want it to be in. There is no downtime for the procedure, however, and you are free to resume as normal right after.

Results can become apparent in as little as 24-48 hours after the procedure. You will still continue to look like yourself, just with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure is minimal and quick, meaning you do not need to pause your life for any healing time. There will be no discomfort or pain after the procedure.

While results may begin to show in as little as 24 hours, they will become more visible over the next two weeks. Those that are looking to get Botox for a specific event should do so ~2 weeks before, so the Botox has time to really take place. Makeup and other topical products can be applied to the face again directly after the procedure.

How long does BOTOX® last?

How long your Botox will last will differ depending on a few factors. The area where you received the Botox, for one, can affect the length of time it will last. The amount of Botox received is another factor. Genetics and general differences in each person also mean different results for different people. In general, Botox can last anywhere from three to six months.

Botox is not permanent and will need to be continually touched up to see the best results. We recommend patients come back every 4-6 months to touch up their Botox. It’s important to understand that Botox is not a one-and-done procedure. It should be considered on the same level as getting your eyebrows done or tanning if you partake in any of these activities. They are continual efforts that need to be repeated time and time again for the best results.

What is the difference between BOTOX® and fillers?

Botox freezes the underlying muscle to prevent wrinkles while fillers add volume and fill space. Botox does not add volume or increase the size or shape of any facial features. Botox can only help with the places on the face that have underlying muscle such as the crow’s feet area or forehead lines. Fillers can be injected in any area across the face.

Fillers are injectables that enhance the size of lips, cheeks, etc. They have become increasingly popular among the younger demographic in recent years. It’s not uncommon to hear of young women and men speaking about getting filler, which is different from Botox.

While Botox may only last for up to 6 months, some fillers may last as long as 2 years. Fillers may cause bruising and the injection site may remain sore after the procedure, unlike Botox. Fillers are used for filling in areas that are hollow or add volume to areas that are lacking.

If you are looking to prevent wrinkles and fine lines and slow the aging process, Botox is what you are looking for. Fillers are more aligned with those looking to change facial features’ actual shape and appearance. Fillers often run more expensive than Botox for one single treatment.

Speak with your Larry to help get a better understanding of the difference between Botox and fillers. We can help you determine which procedure will work better for the issues you are trying to prevent.
